Question My first 3 what do you think..?

Hey guys, Newbie here...The mail man showed up today with my new vise and couple tools. Pretty work considering the 7 inches of snow on the ground... anyway I thought I would give it a try. I think they turned out pretty good... Used some bucktail on the first two then some widgeon feathers and some goose feather on the third. Think the buck tails may be a little long. All feedback welcomed...
Thanks for all the great info you guys post..
    Yall make it look easy..

I wouldn't worry about the tail. I have fished with long tail jigs for quite some time, and they do just as well as the short ones. I think that some folks say they might cause short strikes, but from my experience I have not noticed any more missed fish from using the longer tails. There are some people that prefer the longer tails. Oh yeah your jigs look great. way better than my first ones!

After 40 or 50 jigs and a few trips fishing with them, you will come up with your own oppinion on tail length. I "try" to make mine about half the length as the hook shank, but also depends on hook size/length. I like mine short and fat. But don't tell my wife that!!!

BTW - Welcome to the tying board from NW Ohio! Jigs look good, the feather jig would be a good choice in a lake with shad, right shape! All are way better than my firsts.

    Default Your first

I like the two on the right more than the left, but they will all catch fish. If you want a shorter tail, trim the root and leave the tips for better action. The right one will do well, shad imitation. Try some tinsel or flash in the side of the bucktails to give em some good definition. Nice work.:D
