Peacock Herl

Anybody else use peacock herl as a replacement for chenille ?

I like to roll about four strands together than hold with hackle pliers on one end. After herl is wrapped forward to head will either use tinsel or wire to help hold it down.

Whan I first started to use herl seemed like after a few fish the herl began to come off. With the the tinsel or wire wrap I haven't had this happen.To be fair though I haven't had a hot and heavy bite since I started doing this.

The natural iridesence sems to close the deal as far the fish are concerned.
Will certainly know more after this spring.

I love peacock herl and hate it too!!!!!!!!! I re-inforce the herl with my tying thread and it seems to hold up better. But it sure does make jigs look nice and the fish seem to like it too!!!!!!!!

I do not use it go replace chenille. I am with Fatman in that it can be messy to work with. I also question it's durability as opposed to Kip.

I do not use it go replace chenille. I am with Fatman in that it can be messy to work with. I also question it's durability as opposed to Kip.

Just using as body material Ship. As a tail I tried some on my clousers. They looked great but as you stated their durability was short lived. I will post pix tommorow of a few I've done with the herl as body material.

Even as a body material it may prove to be too fragile. But I had good luck this fall with it by wrapping with wire or tinsel oe even both sometimes.

I use a lot of peacock herl – only from the eyes – never strung. Has more fluff and seems to be stronger. Sometimes with wire and sometimes not.

I've used peacock herl to tie extremely abstract creations for smallmouth bass fishing. Here's a "sculpin" pattern that I tied.

Sculpin

The herl, used here, represents the pectoral and caudal fin rays or... maybe it doesn't.

Spider slider head - 1/16 of an ounce with #4 hook.

Sure used it a good bit and like Fatman I use my thread to make it tougher and then you can still tie in a thin wire too if you want. Fish love the stuff.

i use a good bit of it my self but then again i gt fromthe guy next door who hase 4 of them fish love it i have found if you take a lil glue down befor you wrap it holds up longer but if ya get to much glue it kills the look
