Agree with deathb4disco, read all the stick post at the top of this board first.

As far as tools and vise, wow that is a question of each individual person. Some don't want to spend or can't spend the kind of money the better stuff cost so it will depend on your pocket book.

If you PM me we can have more detailed talks. I have been at this for a pretty long time now and can tell you where to buy what and all depending on your pocket book and what kind of jigs/flies you want to tie.

Personally, I believe that you've found one of the best collections of jig tyers, who are also willing to give advice, on the internet.

Your key to getting started will be to identify the types of jigs you wish to tie. Then, others can provide you with further advice concerning your tools and materials.

Some types of jigs are better tied with specific tools, which may be a little different from other types. Your supplies could come from a multitude of sources.

Some have said to stay away from tying kits. I strongly agree with this.

I began less than 3 months ago with the process you are now beginning. These are just my opinions. The folks out here will take you from scratch and save you money at the end of the road, IF you listen to them. I believe in buying good tools in the first place. Should you change your mind you can always get most of your money back from good tools, cheap ones sit or are given away. Your vise is the most important tool and should be a well educated decision. Many, many to choose from, and leave the knock offs in the store. Some to look into are the Danvise, peak rotary,anvil apex, renzetti traveler. All these are similar rotary vises. The Danvise is surprisingly well made being mostly composite, and is very affordable. You can spend $800 on a vise if you were inclined but it's just not needed. Check for smooth rotation, smooth closing of the cam that holds the jaws closed, and overall adjustments. I found some lower priced ones that were raspy or hard to operate. Rotary makes winding chenille easier and lets you check the other side while sitting. A Matarelli finisher and CERAMIC bobbins are good to have. Steel bobbins work but can be aggravating sometimes(cutting thread).

Wrap the starter thread on the hook shank. Add a drop of super glue. Tie in a two tone marabou tail. Add a drop of super glue.Tie in Krystal flash. Double over and add a half hitch knot. Begin to tie in the chenille and black striping or variegated chenille at the end of the tail feathers. (I only prefer my chenille body to be about 1/3 of the entire hook length. Usually about four turns.) Strip off some of the fibers so the inner thread is exposed and wrap that with the tying thread. Then bring the tying thread to the front. Wrap the chenille tightly about four turns to the front. Secure with a half hitch knot. Wrap the stripes to the front of the jig hook. Secure with two half hitch knots. Cut the extra off close to the jig body. Add a drop of super glue. Hang the fly to dry.
