There's craft fur and then there's fishing craft fur!!! I've ordered some stuff from punisher lures and it is WAY above the crap from Wally World and JoAnne's fabrics.

Doesn't that suck... you put that word "fishing" in front of craft hair and it probably doubles if not triples the price. It's probably just a matter of quality control, but they have no problems sticking that hook up our..... well, never mind. :rolleyes:

I have a few colors of both "fish" and "craft" craft hair now. Big problem with the "craft" craft hair seems to be shorter length and alot more under fur to pull out so you don't get alot of good hair from one cut of it.

Not a big fan of the craft or fish hair myself. I will stick to the natural hair.

The Punisher stuff isn't all that bad at $1.99 per color. and once you decide if you like it or not they have a great pack of one of each color for $29.85.

This is the same stuff as float-n-fly's are made of.

I have some from bass pro that had a rumpf co. label on it, and it looks like the stuff on punishers site. does anyone know if it is the same? It has a very lively action, tho not much stiffness. My stuff looks like what pup has on those pinkie jigs, on his recent post. I had to cut alot off the backing for one jig, because the fiber count per square inch was kinda thin. It tapers nicely because the fiber ends are not all the same length.

I use a lot of Darice Craft Fur (long pile). It may be found at some of the better fabric stores in limited colors. I ordered mine on-line through thisandthat4you.com.

I used to use Westrim craft fur when I first started tying. It performs very similarly to what Redear described above. However, Westrim may have discontinued supplying it. My Google seaches are drawing blanks for me with the exception of occasional eBay finds.

I prefer Darice from craft vendors. Their basic color line comes in 9 X 12" swatches. For other colors, like chartreuse, I'd choose Extra Select Craft Fur or Craft Fur Plus from one of the many on-line tackle suppliers. You can mix the various synthetic furs to create some interesting-looking jigs.

Another option involves selecting craft fur from bolts at fabric stores. This is hit or miss. I've found some short pile fur that looks extremely good in the water and is great for 1/16-oz. jig ties.

One more option...Troll dolls. Take a look at them. Their hair is pretty good for hair jigs. I believe much of it is synthetic, though some of it may be natural. Yard sales can provide treasure troves of these at low cost. The colors are vivid and often fluorescent. Even chartreuse can be found. Be careful to sanitize them if you go this route. You don't want to suffer with something like a case of pink eye caused by handling used trolls.
