Start with one that looks like it will work and go form there. Just do yourself a favor and get a little better quality than the cheapest you can find. Machined brass and a good quality $40-100 vise will last for years and years. I know, I made a cheapo last for 14 years and 1000's of jigs/flies but I wish I had a better one from the start.

I would suggest Terra rotary if you want to go a little fancier or a regular Terra, Spider rotary are also highly recommended although everything I have read tells me I would probably break one just from being too heavy handed with it and it not being all metal.
I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.

If you have a cabela's or bass pro close by check out a few vises there. I work for cabela's and I'm sure one of the guy's in the fly shop would steer you in the right direction, maybe even help tie a few with you to get you going.

Have tied more years than I will admit to. I have two vices a Herters no.9 and My ever faithfull Thopmson AA. Don't want any thing more fancy don't need any thing more fancy. I must have tied over 10,000 jigs and half as many flies with those two vices. Some times simpler is better. Keep the reloading equipment it might just come in handy one day when you can't get any more ammo. Like if'n these current wackos get there way.

BTW Thompson AA and the BPS Sunrise look the same. A India copy of the Thompson.

First of all I want to thank all you folks for standing up to help me out. This web site is the best!! I got my hands on a peak and an apex at BPS Charlotte yesterday and like them both. The peak is a genuine machine, built very well. The Apex is a little smaller and would travel better and is also well built. Found ceramic bobbins, and several other tools so the education has begun. I plan on taking my time getting set up to slow the " wish I hadn't bought this" process I'm almost famous for. The holidays are around the corner and I have things to do for others so my gifts to myself will wait. You will all hear of my exploits as I progress. Thank you all once again. Tim

I visit a Hoosier fly shop that features the Anvil Apex on its display floor. A very nice vice. You'll be excited when you begin to tie with it.

We've only had three vise's I bought my first one when I was about 14 we are 62 now and we been tying on the same vise for many years I think it depends on how serious you want to get if you truly love tying jigs it pays to buy a good quality vise
