Thread: Jig Swap Solution

This is just an idea that I want to throw out there and see what everybody thinks. I have missed the last two swaps because I do not live on the computer 24/7. I understand that people have their reasons for only wanting to tie 15 jigs and I respect that. I personally get tired when I tie the same jig multiple times and I think people get better quality jigs when you keep the number low. On the flip side I think that anybody who has enough interest to sign up should be welcome and encouraged to participate.

Here is my solution:
Set the number of jigs at a reasonable number (say 15 - 18 jigs).
Set a sign up deadline and DO NOT limit the number of participants.
Set a completion date of 2-3 weeks after sign up.
Assign everyone a number in the order that they signed up.

Here is an example of how it would work:
Each participant ties 15 jigs.
If you have 15 or less participants, swap as usual.
If you have more than 15 participants then each participant would swap with the next 15 who signed up behind them.

If you had 18 participants it would work like this:

#1 swaps with #2-16
#2 swaps with #3-17
#3 swaps with #4-18
#4 swaps with #5-18, #1
#5 swaps with #6-18, #1,2
#6 swaps with #7-18, #1-3
#7 swaps with #8-18, #1-4
#8 swaps with #9-18, #1-5
#9 swaps with #10-18, #1-6
#10 swaps with #11-18, #1-7
#11 swaps with #12-18, #1-8
#12 swaps with #13-18, #1-9
#13 swaps with #14-18, #1-10
#14 swaps with #15-18, #1-11
#15 swaps with #16-18, #1-12
#16 swaps with #17,18, #1-13
#17 swaps with #18, #1-14
#18 swaps with #1-15

Everyone who wants to gets to participate, Nobody has to tie more than 15 jigs, Everyone gets 15 jigs from other tiers, the swap is finished up in a timely manner, Nobody gets mad or their feelings hurt, the Crappie.com jig swaps continue, and the world is a better place because of it !!!!!

The down side: The Swapmeister has a little bit more to keep track of.
If everyone would put their number on their jig tag I don't think it would be that big of a deal.
This is just an idea, please let me know what you think of it.

I understand you thoroughly Jig man.I really think its too" much for most here to chew,unless you host it as you say...If i may be so forward w/ that opinion.Very nice approach ,and I will be very interested in participating in your swap when/should you get the chance to do so.It would be a slight drag missing out on several tiers creations this way,But"would be the exchange for a timely swap I guess?The speed in which these things work best is iffy though you know that,who doesn't?Three weeks is great for some to turnout,not as fast as I'd think it should be to the dedicated. Not a bad suggestion at all. I made up a diagram to help those who like to see things in a diagram format to help concrete what's being presented.



However... how would you address the following issues?

1. A tyer doesn't mail in the right number of jigs. Instead of 15 they mail in 10.

2. Tyer #13 drops out at the last possible moment.

3. The swapmeister gets confused and the sorting of the jigs gets all messed up and they get mailed out. Some folks get way more jigs than they should and the others are shorted on the number of jigs that they should have received. Swapmeisters are human and mistakes will be made.

4. Sign-up deadline date is reached and afterwards more tyers want to join in on the swap.

$1 The swap miester makes everyone aware of the inherent,includes the remaining jigs to the line up in order of sign up and asks those not receiving that jig do they want their extra jig back...

$2 Still up to the Miester to inform the tiers of the situation,and present the tiers w/whats only fair which is does the miester keep or return the jigs left over...Ive noticed every saying ..."keep my extras swapmiester..."
Dont think were gonna eat any ones lunch for that one,as wee all know "POO HAPPENS RIGHT???At the same time"we are all pretty sure what we will be doing around the time of the present month,and most will have there jig ideas,or eveen the jig made and ready for mailing.

$3 ..."I just bought a new Mossberg this year for the goose's ,and will be well aware of the address of the miester n' question!!!Miester contacts a veteran,and makes them aware there maybe an issue,If not aware mistakes have been made,He makes it right best he can by informing the entire swap,and everyone w/the extra jigs could send them back to him to make right at miester cost. everyone will get at least the masses"...God god help the greedy"

$4 Last ,and is/Has"been an issue of most importance since the Hawgs swapI say again up to the Miester!PERSONALLY"I know"that you know" the next swap is coming soon after the one finishing up!Am I right guy's???(Newbies are allowed to read the rules ,and they are understood ,and most WELCOME anytime. Until a swap is laid out for them ,I say..."If majority of the swap is in agreement"then their in!W/in the late time allowance of all swap entries.usually 24hrs. after at the very latest!Giving them a 4th day.

"If you are not" signed up on a free for all,of any kind on my swap"particularly in THREE" days given at the most",You obviously have too much time out side the swaps to do other things,and will be comfortable to wait for the next.If your interested ,"your going to inform some one of your interest during your busy season,Walk's thru the woods to and from sommers",Wife swaps, he"he "Lay down baby",think I luv ya"!...Least a half hourWELL she's yours not mine! I think the simplest way to resolve these issues mentioned would be very simple the swapmister for the next swap would announce within ten days of the swap that has just started the exact day that He or She planes on posting His or Her swap for sign up at a time when the majority of Folks are at home, also the number of people that They are going to have allowing a 20-30 day window for those that are innterrested to review this and make a sound decission for Themselves if They want in now if there's no way They can access computer at the sign-up start time They can proxy a person to list Them ,but this person can only list 1 person if They get in they do if They don't They don't this removes any and all grips and complaints that any single person could or would have They might just type to slow like Me and miss out by a word or 2!

How about a blend of both worlds? What I mean is continue with the Crappie
Swap only one for each month. Tyers would be limited to the swap meisters
criteria for size, weight, color, whatever and also how many. This must be a Crappie jig swap and the designated swap meister has to post when sign up
will start.

Then perhaps on a seperate forum have an unlimited amount of swaps
but very specific as far as for example: smallie swap, trout swap, bluegill swap, redear swap or as Atticafish mentioned a wife swap, although my wife didn't think too much of that one.:p Also specific size, I realize a 1/100 oz jig would not be for smallies. I also realize that all jigs at any time can catch any fish, but you know what I mean. This would accomplish several things. Any tier would
only have to wait and pick his swap preference if he missed the once a month Crappie swap. However he or she wouldn't have to wait a month and possibly miss it again as there would be another swap of some kind coming up.
This wouldn't solve the issue of drop outs or short number of jigs sent, but I
feel that issue is based on moral and ethics or sometimes just a mistake. These unlimited swaps could have a limit of ten or twelve tiers because there could be several going on at the same time.
This whole issue is a result of CDC growing in popularity and will continue.
I think the whole concept of swaps is a fantastic idea whereby newbies, vets.
and inbetweeners can learn, laugh(jig names) and share with each other
across the entire nation. After all folks, we're all adults here and instead of bickering about swaps let's solve it. I understand both sides of the issue as
I have been too late and missed out and also ran a parallel swap to compensate for it. I believe they both worked well and no one was left out.
We all fish for more than just crappie, at least I do, so rather than worry about how to restrict it, let's open it up a bit.

Looks good on paper but will never work.
One reason - a swap is designed so all tyers make a unique jig to them for the swap. For example a jig containing fox hair etc. "just an example" going by your plan each person will miss out on a jig from three people that they will be sending a jig to. Totally ruins the point of a swap. The key term being swap. If someone gets a jig from me then I get one from them otherwise its a jig lottery.

With all the above said - if everyone is ok with not getting a jig from everyone then it is a good solution!
My biggest complaint is not getting to sign up. I really think a timeline is the best answer and using your plan the number of tyers is not really an issue.
