Default Checking out side sloughs on Mississippi River

Took the Jon out the other day to run it a bit before putting it up for sale.

Decided to check out a slough on the river I'm thinking about Crappie Fishing.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much warmer the water was in the slough.

River was 45F; slough was 55F - increase of 10 degrees! Gadzooks! Will definitely be going there soon with the poles, jigs and a bucket of minners.

Gotta sell my jon soon. Wife is barking at me for having 3 boats on the premises. Got the new, used Stinger wagging its tail, wanting to get after some slabs, the 16' Lowe with the 25 Evinrude, and an old Lund my buddy stored here on my field that needs lots of work. It was a "project" boat that he didn't get time to work on and/or lost interest.

On a side note: going back to the boat ramp, the dang wind really picked up and was tossing the Jon around like I was in galvanized tub. It got down-right scary - whitecaps in full-force, but I motored over to the opposite side of river where a sharp bend blocked most of the wind.

Sorry for rambling... Just drinking coffee and decided to post a couple things that were running around in my feeble mind...

Will give a report on the slough fishing after I'm able to get up there.

I use to love going over to New Boston and Keithsburg sauger and crappie fishing, haven't been back in years. Need to get the old gang together and do it again. Had one of our best days crappie fishing on the backwater when my buddy pulled up on island to scout out some duck hunting spots and me and other buddy sat on back of boat with some beer n minnows and proceeded to load a 5 gallon bucket with nice crappies off some fallen trees we tied up to. We never said a word to our other buddy when he came back from scouting ducks, showed him at landing and he was p o ...That'll teach him to go off scouting ducks when the crappies are biting....

Now, that's funny about not telling your buddy until you got to the landing

Who the heck wants to eat a greasy duck when crappie are available? (It is fun shooting them, but too much work for this old, lazy fat boy these days.)

I posted in a different thread about my dad and I fishing up in a long slough on the MO river about 40 years ago and catching a boat-load of slab crappie.

I want to head to Rend soon, but I'm only a mile from the Miss and Ill rivers, so if I can zero-in on these local crappie I'd be in hog heaven!
