Jig question
I was curious what everyone here uses for hook sizes in 1/16 and 1/8 oz jig heads, especially up in the northern part of the state. Seems like a lot of guys down south use 2, 1, 1/0, etc hook sizes, but theyre also catching slabs that would make some of my bass catches look small. Seems like most crappie around here are in the 9-12 inch rang maybe.
Ive been mostly buying jigs from Gander Mountain and Im guessing the hooks are 6s and maybe smaller in the 1/32oz heads. I was thinking of ordering some from the members here but most seem to offer whatever size hook you want. So im not quite sure what to buy.
i was thinking of 6s are okay for the 1/16 heads and maybe 4s for the 1/8? Would those be too big if my average fish is in the 10-12 inch range? Or should I go a size larger on each?

#2 sickle down here for the most part. Even smaller fish can eat them with no problem.

For a 1/16 I like a #4 or #2 sickle for a 1/8 I use a #2 or #1 but I dont use 1/8 oz a lot.

I like number 4 in 1/8th. I bend the hook out just a tweak! I use braid and fish it right in the brush. It don't get hung up much and when it does. One quick snap of the pole and out she comes! It will work perfect in your situation!!!!!!!

I use in Illinois up to 1/0. On the 1/16 pending mold go up to 1. On the 1/8 I can go up to 1/0. If you are not scared and want a sample kit shoot me a PM. Only going to pour for another weekend. By that time Evergreen should be open water. a 10" fish has not problem choking down my jigs.

I do the same ... both 1/32 & 1/16oz ballhead weedless jigs with #2 Aberdeen hooks. Suffice it to say that I've caught enough Bluegill & dink Crappie to safely say that a #2 hook & a 1.5" to 2" plastic body can be sucked in without much effort from the Crappie.Originally Posted by Pool13_Jeff
I'd never go below a #4 hook for a 1/32oz jig, and that's the smallest jighead I use. While I have used 1/16oz jigheads with #4 hooks, successfully, I went to the larger hook so as to keep a decent gap between the hook point & plastic bodies I use. When I was primarily using hollow tubes, the smaller hooks were of no consequence. When I went to solid body tubes, grubs, and minnow shaped plastics (many of which are bigger/thicker than the hollow tubes) I went up to the next size hook to keep that gap. No complaints & no plans to go back to the smaller hooks.

I use mostly #2 and #4 hooks and I have no problem catching 3" crappies on the #2s.
