Hey guys, my wife and I have an opportunity to buy a place on Lake Mattoon with it's own dock and are seriously thinking about it. We were looking at places within 20 or so miles of either Shelbyville or Mark Twain in Mo. since they are both almost the exact same distance from where we live, just to have a place to stay while fishing, since I will be retiring for the second and final time next spring. We found a place we liked in MO. but couldn't come to an agreement on price with the owner so we started looking in Illinois and stumbled onto this place. We want it mainly for Shelbyville fishing since we live 160 miles away and it's kind of a major operation to go for a few days but like the idea of being able to put in the lake and leave our boat in the water at our own dock for a few days if we feel like it. We know nothing about Lake Mattoon though. Is it worth fishing in occasionally when we're too lazy to go to Shelbyville? I hope some of you fellas from the area have a little familiarity with Lake Mattoon. Thanks in advance for any replies!

A friend of mine has a place down there. He catches some nice crappie regularly. Years ago I fished it for bass and 5 lbers. were not uncommon.Good catfish also.
A person should learn something new every day!Gobob LIKED above post
You might not make that haul over to Shelbyville if you have a place on Mattoon.Good Crappie,Bass,Catfish,Bluegill and some saugeye
I fish it regularly. I'd love to have a place on this lake. Alot of small crappie dominate this lake. Very good bass and catfish fishery.
We came to a verbal agreement over the phone a couple of hours ago on the place on the lake. Have to go back down in a couple of days to sign some papers and make it official. Thanks to all of you for all of the encouraging words about the lake. We wanted a place like this for a while and from what you guys are saying it makes us even more anxious to be able to come down and spend a lot more time fishing. I hope when we start spending more time there we can meet a few more of you folks.
Congrats Kenny on your new place, you won't be disappointed.
Lets go soak a line. Pat
Yep, you'll love it! What area of the lake is it by chance??
Birdie, we are buying one of the places at Campground East I think it is called. One of the mobile homes there. It doesn't look like anything special from the outside but the inside is fixed up very nicely and it has a 35 foot covered screened in deck on it and is 70 feet from our dock, and we can see our dock from the kitchen. Really looking forward to getting it set up the way we want it. I work at the University of Illinois medical school and was able to get myself (for free!) a one piece 6 foot long extra deep stainless steel lab sink with 2 feet of attached stainless steel counter on each side of the sink. The wife rolled her eyes when I told her the very first thing I'm doing is building my fish cleaning station with this. A guy needs to have his priorities straight, right?
Now all you got to do is catch some.
