While out deer hunting with a youth this last weekend, I found a chicken of the woods (also known as sulfur shelf mushroom) growing on a tree so after the morning hunt I cut it off the tree. It was so big that I had to use my jacket to carry it out. Must of been at least 40 pounds. Had to leave some. Good thing about it is that they are supposed to grow back on the same tree next year. I ended up giving over half away but still have plenty. I sliced them thin, floured them up and eat them up. Made a good meal.

I just never did develop a taste for them. I tried them a couple different times. Do you have a super special, secret, or not so secret, recipe for them?
If she doesn't brown them first, I think they are too spongy. She browns them before we freeze them as well.

I think I would rather have the mushrooms instead of the crappie. I dont pick em mainly cause I dont know which are good, but I love eatin em.

I found a package of fresh Jowl in the freezer, fried it up crispy, melted a little lard in another cast iron skillet flowered up some of the hen of the woods in flour, bread crumbs and a little Andy's cajun, fried till crispy brown cooked a couple cackle berries in the jowl grease and chowed down, life is good.Sorry I don't have any pictures but the kids cleaned it up pretty fast.

I don't know if they will stay fresh for two weeks in the fridge,I pull them apart soak them in water in the fridge, might get by with a week. But as long as it stays warm there will still be some in the woods for awhile.Let me know how freezeing them works I never tried it.

I just saute'd some this morning for an omlet that I had in a baggie for over a week and they were just fine
I've put some up in the freezer just freeze in water like you do fish or you can vacume seal them, that works really well
