Hey Flathead,
I took your post from Catch-n & brought it here.
Thanks for giving me the O.K.
As told by Flathead....
It started in 2000; I worked with an outdoor guru. When ever we headed to the lake or river, he would always SMOKE me.
To him, a depth bomb and the arm length is the way to fish and find depth or to us "SONAR"
It didn't matter that he used 12lb line on an old (broken) summer rod with the backbone of a 2X4, rigged with a Zebco 202 that did not work. He would just use the old, hand over fist method, of days of old. He would put down a "Beach Ball" sized bobber and a huge jig and still. You all know the guy that can get fish and does it like a Caveman (sorry Geiko commercial guy & family).
Well Caveman Jim, welcome to the Sonar, spring bobber, and T.H.E. Jig!
He had 2 holes, each with an "Ice Buster" bobber and Demon size 10/8 jigs (my rods and fishing setups before). He brought his equipment but had not updated them since the last time he broke the line/s (would have to retie them). He loaded them up, one with a minnow and one had a spike.
He said, "Do you need a minnow"? I said I don't need meat. He said, "OKAY”!!
In less than five minutes, he was Stunned!!! Regardless of the depth, I could see and fish the whole water column using sonar. If I see a fish come in and suspend above my offering, I could reel up to them, which is impossible to do without sonar and using a bobber. He did not want to put a flasher down to fish (I brought both of my sonar units); he said it scares the fish, knowing that I had one in my hole. He did keep asking, (What depth are you getting them).
Some people are not willing to keep an open mind. I was wondering if the trip to fish with Keith was a 100+ mile waste, myself.
I would not have had the confidence in T.H.E. Jig, if I had not had the opportunity to fish it with Crappie Keith. He knows what he is doing and conveys (teaches) it well, if you are willing to listen and/or observe. Keep in mind that I went thinking, “I know how to fish a spring bobber, what could he know"!!!! Keith has changed my fishing style. (For the short time I spent fishing with Keith, I tried to absorb as much information as I could).
I went to the lake without minnows, spikes, wax worms and still have the confidence that I will take fish. More fish than I usually did in the past.
To sum up our trip- 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm (3 1/2 hours)
-Rush Lake
-30 FOW
-Suspended fish from 18' to the bottom
Caveman Jim- 13 Fish, using meat, 2 lines and bobbers
Flathead- 45+ Fish, using a spring bobber and T.H.E. Jig (one line was used)
Please, do yourself a favor. Take this opportunity to change your fishing, and CATCH-N!!!
Thank you for the knowledge/lesson,
Flathead...
