Monday 9 Apr Blackshear report
I wasn't too sure how the fishing would be with the cold weather we have had the past few days. Got up to the lake at 2pm. Started fishing under Smoake bidge and from the first cast the crappie were biting. I caught around 60 by 7 pm and kept 30. Farted around fishing for bream under the lights and bass until midnight, then caught another 23 and I was done by 2am. The fish after midnight were impressive in size. About 15 were around a pound each. The day fishing was ridiculous though. I had a blast. Another interesting thing I got to witness as a bystander...or byfloater. Under the bridge there were thousands of bream suspended within 3 feet of the surface. They were everywhere. Big to small. I tried to toss small jigs at them, but they wouldn't even glance at it. So watched them for awhile and found that they would open their mouths and suck something in every 30 seconds or so. I guess they were feeding on some sort of hatched larva, too small for me to see. Now for the exciting part. For the next four hours I watched as 3 pound and up largemouth and hybrid took turns slicing and dicing these bream up. I saw some nice bass. I saw one that had to have been 7 or 8 pounds. By the way the water was very clear. I couldn't get the bass to hit any crankbaits or anything. They were keyed in on those bream. It was another beautiful night and I'm glad I gave Blackshear one more shot. I don't have a water temp sensor, but the water has definitely cooled off.

Crazy as it sounds.......I think it was Mayfly larva. They were all over the river just below the dam this weekend (cold as it was). The larva were scooting around just under the surface..........then you would see them come to the top, break their "shell" and fly away after a few minutes. fish were all over them in the Flint River shoals. The water temp was 66 below the dam. The generators were running and they pull water from the bottom of the lake.

I am in Leesburg, just minutes from Smoake Bridge. I am dreaming of a crappie day like that! My wife and I are both off work this weekend and we have been talking about where would be the best place to go. Sounds like you had a great day crappster! Thanks for the posting about your day.

Joe, actually I think your right. I saw a few mayflies on the surface also. So that makes sense. Oprystar, they should be biting under the bridge this weekend. Like I said the water temps cooled off quite a bit, so there should be at least another week or two where the crappie are active. It always slows down when Blackshear water gets up to bathwater temps. I was casting black/chartreuse curly tails on 1/32 oz jigheads, also had minnows out on a slip cork rig.

Way to go crapster. Me and my dad went yesterday and did really good under the bridge. We cought alot of crappie but not many big ones at all. Had alot of fun tho. GOD bless.

Yeah the majority of the fish under the bridge were not as large, but I caught so many I was able to keep 30 good sized ones with a few over a pound. Also, after cleaning the fish, well over half of them still had developed egg sacs, and several of the males were dark like they were getting ready to spawn. Apparently not all of them managed to spawn before the cold snap.
