The 3" cigar corks that I have had a slit cut in them. What I did was take my pocket knife and made the slit just a tad bigger. Not to big as you don't want the cork to be able to come off. Then work the cork back and forth to get it on the tip. Once the cork is on then cover the slit with clear tape or fill the slit with clear silicone.
did that today with a cork i found in my shop . worked good
