I've got a buddy that loves his! He has the new Garmin echotech 70 dv with GPS and chirp technology. To me that unit is a bit pricey.
He was impressed by the 1 foot contours but the more digging I did the more I became convinced that the 1 foot contours don't represent any new information but instead are a computer program extrapolation of previous maps breaking the 20 foot or 10 foot contours down to a 1 foot resolution. Does anyone remember the Bass Professor Doug Hannon and the piece of software he had? At the time it was revolutionary because it showed 2D contours in a 3D fashion as if you were in a submarine looking at the lake bottom - but again it was a computer program breaking down previous map sources and represented no new information per se. Long story short is that the "new information" is coming via public input or put another way actual scan images that are submitted by the general public to generate maps with. Let me gather my wits and post this topic on a separate thread.
Have a Great Day,
