Four of us went to West Point Friday and came home Sunday due to the heavy rains. Crappie were scattered but most were full of eggs. We found a few in the shallows and they hit a special little jig I make about as good as they did last year (we kept 90 in two days last year). We ended up keeping 10 crappie, 3 catfish and one bass on Friday. I caught 18 bass on my jig as well as one of the catfish, the crappie, yellow perch and about 40 of those 12" stripers. What a blast on 4lb test and ultra lite rods!
Saturday was much better because we found some big crappie in 18' FOW trolling triple ripples. Later we left yellow jacket creek and went up the river a couple of miles into a cove loaded with crappie. We limited out with nice 1-1.25lb fish. Caught several bass in that cove also. The fish in the last cove were in 14' FOW suspended about 4-6 feet deep. We had a blast.
Our other fishing buddies picked up 13 on Friday and 37 on Saturday. They mainly trolled in the 17' FOW range.
Water temps are warming up. We found 62 degrees in the backs of the coves and the morning water temp was steady at 55-56.
Going to Guntersville in the next few days. Will give a report when I get back.
A few sunny days and it's going to be hot!
