I tie my emergers with no hackle, just a bit of extra dubbing that I rough up with an old hacksaw blade, and a piece of foam sticking up just behind the eye. that way it suspends with the foam just dimpling the surface, and the dubbing looks pretty close to the tangle of legs/wings of a crippled emerger. I like it because it's very effective, and really quick to tie so I can really crank 'em out and don't mind trying for those fish that losing a fly is more likely than catching the fish. Plus, with closed cell foam, they never stop floating perfectly until the foam is torn up too badly. Also, with the outrageous price of a good rooster neck, who can afford the 50 different colors that you "need" to match the hatch? I save those for my adult patterns.
