Not sure if you have done anything with the feathers yet.
The original post is a bit dated.
In the future, if you have a bird that you want to keep for feather salvage, try skinning the bird and clean as much fat from the hide. After the bird is skinned, rub the hide with borax, found in the laundry department at the store. (you know the 20 mule type)
The hide will toughen up in no time and you can then bag it.
Done this way your feathers will stay somewhat organized.
