Ugly Talquin Stump Strike

My partner and I went up to the back of Harvey’s creek around noon Sat. On the way out I was following him with almost full trim and running 40mph. About 50 yards behind his wake, I hit one of those Talquin Stumps! I’ve never hit one this hard. Lost a prop one time on a oyster bar in Keaton, but never a strike hard enough that I thought the engine/boat would go to the bottom of the lake. Well, the engine never missed a beat so that was good. My next thought was a hole in the boat so I headed to the landing.
When I got to the dock, the top cowling was standing almost straight-up. It had busted the front latch cover. A little damage on the lower unit but for the most part it looks fine. Drain some oil out of the lower unit when I got back yesterday and no water there. Anybody got any other ideas of what I may should check-out from this stupid incident?
What I mean by stupid is I know too never run 40mph at Talquin. I’ve ran that same channel in Harvey’s hundred times without hitting anything. Running behind another boat gave me to much confidence!

Check the prop shaft for a bend in it. Even a slight one will cause early wear on the seals, allowing water in.....

My next boat will be another tunnel hull with a jackplate. All the places I fish have multitudes of hazards.

When I get a motor for my little john it will be a tiller with a manual JP.

Ya may want to check your pants for stains!!!

....Just glad it wasn't any worse. I hit one 3 weeks ago going wide open and it took off about 1/2 of my skeg...I believe those stumps just move around from day to day:p

I hit something yesterday while driving Rawhides boat....I ain't worried none driving his boat :D

I like to run wide azzzzzz open on Talquin....in Rawhides metal tub....:D

That's what I get for letting him sleep at wheel. If you see use coming don't be so sure Blindhog see's you.

Had myself and two other aircraft mechs to help me go over the boat. found four small breaks on the trans welds. One was actually about three inches long. The four attached boats where loose so we tighten them. Pulled the lower unit case it it looked OK. No water in the oil in the lower unit. Going to have the welds redone tomorrow. Be back onthe lake hopefully Friday after a Doc visit!:D

When you run fast at Talquin, it's "RUSSIAN ROULETTE". Expensive gamble. Dumb question, "Did you have your life vest on and your kill switch attached?" Enough said, thank god you and passanger are all right. I have seen bass boats with 200 hp running wide open. Would hate to think of the end result if they hit a stump.

I run slow or medium. Hit two during the past 6 months. Lucky, bounced off the stump with little or no damage.

Wear life jacket and kill switch. Don't want to hear about the funeral of a crappie.com member.
