I bought a new 1957 Johnson 35 horse electric start, which was then their largest motor. It was the same as for appearance as this one, but a deep red/maroon color with white accent trim.Originally Posted by florida guy

I traded a 54 Merc Mark 55 40 horse manual start in on it which was at the time their largest.
The Merc was faster, but much noisier, especially since the cowling was off so much. lol
Most runabout boats were molded plywood with mahogany transoms. Fiberglass boats were just starting to show up by the mid 50s.
Brand names like MFG and Lyman were the most popular where I was from. Mostly they were of the lap strake hull design.
