While im very happy with my 1720 Key West with the 90 Yamaha, like all boats it isn't an all round perfect rig.
Down here where I live and fish, much of the area is shallow in spots at least, thereby causing me problems.
Especially the St Johns south of Rt 192, and small lakes not shown on maps along that stretch down to Rt 60. Also, some places have lots of water way back into the Cypress trees/swamps, which should make for nice hot weather locations. So I decided I needed a good boat that would give me better access to those type spots.
After a few months of searching, I decided on a new 1442 Alweld bare bones Jon boat. It's rated for 25 hp, but my thoughts are something 9.9 to maybe 20 max, and probably 15.
I bought this boat from a dealer over on the west coast, and he claims a 9.9 Merc would send it along just fine for my type use.
Now my dilemma. For the last 25 years or so ive been using Yamaha motors and have been very happy.
But should I have tunnel vision, and rule out others?
I called the mechanic who services my engine and who dosent sell motors, but uses Yamahas on his own boat.
His only advise was to get a fuel injected engine, further adding to my confusion. First, it pretty much rules out most used motors in very nice condition, and even some new ones in that size range including Honda, and I believe even Yamaha.
Would I be apt to be just as happy with another brand, say like Suzuki, or Mercury?
Suzuki can also be bought more reasonably and might have a longer warranty.
How about a carberated model? I can buy a new leftover carberated Merc w/ full warranty, in 15/20 hp cheaper than some new model 9.9s.

Also has anyone had experience with buying online, and having an engine shipped direct to your door? Savings over buying from a dealer are $250 or more, and no sales tax charged. But the tax could catch up later? Any other experiences or opinions?
Thanks
