Thread: Phil and I

He showed up about 630 and with most prep already done we headed to the closest ramp to find we were the second boat there. Looking good already. The only issue was that the first boat was in the middle of the ramp and had done no prep before backing down. We did all our prep, waited over 5 minutes, and he still wasn’t done. Being who I am I had enough about then and proceeded to back down alongside of him with a few inches on either side. He finally got the message and picked up the pace and off we went. Sad thing, It must have been his cousin at the ramp when we pulled out. Thankfully he was in one side instead of in the middle. I dropped Phil off and he got the truck, backed in and we went through a couple of technical difficulties, got connected and pulled out and the other guy was just finishing taking the straps off the transom. It seems consideration of others is a thing of the past. The good part is that I didn’t tell him the error of his ways. I thought it took amazing restraint. Rant complete.

Ran out through smooth water with just a breath of wind chop to my usual starting grounds. I took 3 pics shown below of a sunrise that made me remember how good it is to be an outdoorsman. We took a few minutes to enjoy it and got to the task at hand. Holders in place, rods out, and no one within a half a mile. I wondered if there was a reason for that. Turns out we were just lucky. Headed north and it wasn’t long before we started turning fish over the side, albeit small to start with. We stayed busy with enough fish to find out where it was most productive and started repeating a track. Long about 8 the fish started getting better. We landed one that was clearly over a pound and a quarter (scale was under a rod holder) and it wasn’t the only one. Phil got a little excited when he got one on that slipped the drag every time he tried to lift with the tip of the rod. That one was a pound and a half easy. It was their lucky day, they all got a pass. Total for the day was 21 with half that would have made the cut.

The wind got a bit strong for about 30 minutes but then settled down to somewhere over 5 but under 10. Just right to put some chop on the water and keep us a little cooler. We didn’t turn the TM off for a bit over 4 hours while we enjoyed each other’s company and addressed the major issues of the world. Never did see more than a few boats out and the bite slowed some so we decided to head in right about the time the 2 jet skis started cruising by and doing what they seem to be programmed to do. No fish to clean and a quick run into the wind towards the ramp. Relaxed and feeling like I had done enough for one day, it was just after 11. Put the boat in the yard and covered, Phil gone home, and I went inside to cool down and get a slice of pizza and something cold to drink. I woke up about 2 1/2 hours later. Guess I’m not as tough as I thought I was. Had a great trip in good company and look forward to October. Hope to see y’all there.
