I'm in Central Florida, but I'm sure some will chime in. I will mention that pretty much any of the lakes on the St. Johns water system that I've fished are pretty good.

I live in Orange Park so know your pain when it comes to close in crappie fishing. The better crappie fishing is in lakes a bit south of Jax. Crescent Lake and Lochloosa lakes are good and within about an hour and a half drive which is not too bad.
We have done some nearby creeks and lakes, Black Creek and Doctor's Lake for example, but they do not produced the numbers or overall size of fish we get elsewhere. But it might just be the way we fish'em... who knows.

Yes Crescent lake would be a good one to fish

Some stellar inshore saltwater fishing in Jax.
Southwest of Palatka at Rodman Reservoir. Good fishing on the front side of the dam and in spillway. Unfortunately the long term plans are to breach the causeway and return the area back to the pre-Reservoir days. Pretty sad

I'm from Illinois. I have fished in town of welaka before. Probably close to Jacksonville. Across from launch is okalawha river as well as bear creek, I think it's called. Been there on two trips. Bass crappie cats red fish and Bluegill and sting ray. A short boat rode down river ismlake George. A ride up river is Dunn creek and crescent lake. Also fished lake Stella in crescent city. The day was windy. This little lake was a good way to end that trip got some bass supposed to be crappie there too.
