Thread: Lake Okeechobee levels

Lakes up to 15.5 two feet above normal this time of year. They have been sending it west into the Saint Lucie estuary, like 100 Olympic pools per hour . They are going to start sending it to the west Ft. Meyer areas now that they know that it wont flood them anymore than they have already been. Lakes going to be messed up for a couple months.

This is an absolute tragedy. Everglades is dying due to lack of freshwater entry for far too long and they are going to ruin the east and west coast fisheries. They need to open up and let the water run south into the everglades. Maybe once south Florida actually looses all its revenue from fishing someone will wake up. But it is going to be too late. There is already videos from airplanes showing how far reached the nasty water is affecting the St' lucie estuary out into the Atlantic for miles. Popular shallow water dive sites off Hobe sound are already barren of life after last years debacle. This pumping needs to stop.

We've had federal monies being thrown at this everglades restoration for 15yrs with still no resolution, who's been pocketing these funds. Now the dike is in peril with the corp of engineers doing spot repairs all around the perimeter of the rim canal with huge boulders and still leaking. What a shame

All we hear around here is send the water south!
How about all the developments in the Kissimmee river basin north of the lake clean up their pollutants before they reach the lake.
And while we are on the subject of pollution the lake water test cleaner than the runoff from the canals entering the St Lucie canal west of the lake.
There have been no discharges into the St Lucie this rainy season. The Corps has actually allowed the St Lucie to backflow into the lake.
WHERE IS THE MEDIA REPORTING ON THIS?
The discharges started when it was apparent the hurricane was imminent.
They expect the lake level to reach 17.5' when all the runoff gets here.
The is very little backpumping into the lake from the farming interests south of the lake so we are trying to do our part to clean up the inflo.
The politicians are pushing for the dike repair so they can make the lake a flood control reservoir and raise the water level which will kill the vegetation and that will be the death penalty for the fishing.
I WISH THERE WAS A WAY TO SHUT OFF ALL FLOW EAST AND WEST, WONDER WHAT THE COMPLAINTS WOULD BE THEN.

I agree 100% that they should be monitoring the run-off from the north, with all the farming and cattle acreage which is a major factor with all the phosphates. The lake naturally ran-off to the south before people started building a better mousetrap.

Guys everyone knows the flow South to the Everglades is not going to happen. The Big SUGAR company has invested so much money . They will never sell the land back to the state of Florida . It has to be done by Federal law makers . They need to take it back. There is no other solution . And I hate to say it but the only way it will happen is if the dike breaks at the South end it will fix the problem, 17.5 foot will def have some impact .

Folks need to get the correct info on how the water is flowing from the Big O. No one with the Media wants to look into the runoff coming from elsewhere .
