Default B&M West Point Crappie Rod

    Question on the WPCR 10.
Are these poles spined to fish, eyes up? Another words, with a baitcaster? They have baitcasting (small) type eyes.
    Thanks!

Most crappie poles are designed to fish "eyes" down
Fast way to check is first eye from holder -if its large -its set up for spinning
Med to small - its for bait caster

I find that a lot of factory poles react awkward because they aren't built on the spine of the blank. I have taken the sections of a 2 piece rod and hold them as close to plumb as I can and pushed down on the top and it will reveal the spine of that section. Sometimes it's close others not even close. The west points that I had worked well for me and I think they are a good starting point for someone to try trolling or spider rigging. Being fiberglass, they can take the weight if you run some sinkers for pushing a little quicker, but keep in mind that they will have more bend than some other rods, but it's just nature of the beast. I have bent one over double when I hung up, never broke or splintered. Good rod for the money. Go as long as you can if you're going to spider rig.

Very few production rods are spined correctly. I generally check all rods available in the model I want and pick the closest. Heck arrows are not even checked for spine on a production line and that matters far more than a rod.

What are y'all talking about? Skeet do you mean at the point where the rod doesn't bend the same is where the spine starts? What is the spine made of? I'm guessing the spine is inside the blank? I always thought the whole rod was hollow for the most part??

Every graphite, fiberglass, boron etc blank manufactured has a spine. It basically is a line from end to end that is stiffer. Eyes should be placed in line with the spine for best action as it will bend evenly. Even aluminum arrow shafts have a spine. I believe it is the point where the rolled material is joined. You can take a rod and place tip on ground and apply a little down force to rod creating a bend while keeping a very light grip and rod will spin to spine and you want the eyes placed according to spine if possible. Hard to explain but a search on youtube should bring light to it. If seanfishy sees this he may chime in with a perfect explanation as he works st Mughole and builds rods.

5/13, took the Jon Boat to the last open launch. Well, set it up with an old 90's model Curado Bantam, CU200. Lot of reel I know, but it was just sitting around. I here a lot about B&M poles breaking, but I put this thing to the test! Pushing a double minnow rig out the side, picking up a few, them Umph! direct stop swung the little boat around and figured I had bottom.
Then the "bottom" started pulling me around! Allmost fifteen minuits later, up comes a 7.2 Lb Largemouth. It was a hoot!
I really leaned on that rod a bit, it worked great!
Got a couple of PA's on the way, i'll see if their worh the extra bucks.
