    Default Rod Question

I was at Academy in Orlando this weekend looking at rods. They had a nice selection of lengths and brands. I guess the store brand was Tournament Choice - $19.99. Obviously, for the price the quality is not as good but seemed like a decent crappie pole for spider rigging? What is the difference between TC and BnM or Mr Crappie or Berkley which were $39 to $69? Weight? Anybody use the TC rods? Thanks for the input. I guess I could buy one of each and see which one I like best - but Im always on a budget - I'm married!

If I was setting up for spiderrigging on a budget I would buy the tournament choice or go to Grizzly jig and get the pinnacle limit rods. They are glass rods and heavier than the graphite, but you wont be holding them rigging. Might miss a few of the lightest bites but should be fine unless you are getting into serious Tourney fishing or guiding. Can always start with them to learn and upgrade 1 at a time down the road if you feel it necessary. Who knows ya might be just happy with them. I just changed 2 of my 8' for longlining to West Point Classics to get a slower speed blank for longlining vs the IM8 graphite fast action I was using. Thats a $20.00 rod replacing a $60.00 rod. So ya cant always go by price and composition alone. I say try em, you will be fishing and can change slowly if needed.

I have 10, 11, and 12 Tournament Choice rods and they catch just as many fish for me at those costing 2 or 3 times as much. I have some of the more expensive too which are lighter in weight which is a plus.....but all in all it's whatever you feel comfortable with and are willing to pay.

Well my daughter lives in Orlando as does my best friend. We do not have an Academy in SFl yet and I wanted to check it out while the girls were busy doing their thing Saturday. I also fished Monroe with my buddy on Sunday but we were fishing for lunkers with shiners. I got one nice one 4.8 lbs and missed one near double that size that got off at the boat. I am trying to get my friend to do more spec fishing. I hope my daughter winds up in Orlando permanently after graduation in May and my wife and I will follow when we retire in a few years.
