The Legend of Tree Stump Sam
Ole Sam was one of the Coca-Cola millionaires who lived near Havanah and would spend most of time at Talquin. He didn't have to work anymore after he had made his fortune, so he just fished and lived the life of riley. Rumor was, that he enjoyed his Jim Beam as much as he did fishing and that may have been instrumental in what happened to him.
It was a calm November morning when Sam motored away from the dock like he had done hundreds of times before, headed to his secret fishing spot. People began to worry when he didn't return by noon like he always did, so several folks set out to find him. It wasn't long until one of the locals found his boat drifting near Goat Island. Seems Sam had been in a terrible accident. He was netting a slab when he lost his balance and fell into the lake. While he was climbing back into his boat a big gator grabbed his right leg and took it off right at the knee. After a few weeks of down time Sam wasn't about to let something like that keep him from fishing, so he cut off a pine liter knot tree top right at the waterline and made himself a artficial leg. And that's how he became known as "Tree Stump Sam". Even though Sam has long since passed on, his legend is still very much alive. It's said that if you're fishing in the area of where Sam lost his leg and you ask, "how's the fishin Sam?" you'll hear a voice say...
