For the new folks here's the re-print of the legend of "Talquin Maggie"

THE LEGEND OF TAQUIN MAGGIE a true story!

The little known legend of Talquin Maggie…….Lake Taquin was made in the late 1920's to supply hydroelectric power to the surrounding areas. It was named for the cities the lake lies between, Tallahassee and Quincy. Lake Talquin was formed by the construction of the Jackson Bluff Dam. The abundance of dead trees and stumps scattered about are the reminders of a rich floodplain forest that covered the area before the lake was formed. In addition to flooding the forest, they also flooded many homes. One of which belonged to an little old lady named Maggie, who later became the subject of the legend of Talquin Maggie. Maggie refused to vacate her homestead even though plans were to flood the valley. Efforts were made to forcibly remove her but all attempts failed. Finally Maggie hid out in the woods and eluded the authorities for weeks until they thought she had left the area and they proceeded with the flooding. Several months later a local logger found a book labeled MAGGIE’S JOURNAL. After reading it he took it to the authorities. It seems that Maggie had returned to her home as the flooding began, and after making her last entry in her journal, she tied herself to the tallest oak tree she could find and to this day that’s where Maggie rests. The legend is, if you fish anywhere near that tree you will hear a woman’s voice saying “ dem’ Monroe boys are gonna kick your butts”
First of all, I want to say how nice it was to meet everybody at The Super Slabfest at Talquin. You are all truly a good group of folks that I am proud to be associated with and hoping TnT and I can make it down to one of your Slabfests soon. I am usually not one to talk Smack so you pegged me right, Speckanator. But when you started misinterpreting the "Legend of Talquin Maggie" and bringing down a lake that is so dear to my heart, I have to draw a line somewhere. TnT started me crappie fishing when I didn't even know what a crappie was and has turned me into an avid fisherwoman...and a pretty darn good one too!! Hooker, Rawhide, Chuckauten and all the others have helped and supported me immensely in this great sport. So with that being said, my allegiances are right here at Talquin. I don't actually talk Smack, I just tell you like it is. It just breaks my heart that all you nice people I met last month are going to have to suffer yet another defeat. I won't actually get to fish this Throwdown but the Talquin Maggie spirits will be there. I heard a rumor that TnT may actually have a pretty darn good fishing partner taking my place for the Throwdown. Sorry for what you are going to have to endure on the 15 of Dec Speckanator, but I'll always remember you with a smile on your face. You are a genuine gentleman....and a pretty cool loser!
