Default A couple of Motor questions

I finally put the "Project Boat" in the water on Friday. The good news is that it didn't sink..The bad news is that the prop had spun the hub in it. The motor did run excellent tho....So I left it in the water and gave my trailer a makeover during the weekend. I went back Monday to get the boat and put a different prop on it and she ran out great. But after about 10 minutes or so the bubble "collapsed" and stopped feeding gas to the motor. I had to disconnect the hose from the bubble to release the pressure, reconnect the hose to the bubble and it started pumoing again like it was suppose to. The vent hose does not have any obstructions in it. I know that the fill tube is OK(I had to fix that last week)...So what else could be causing the bubble to collapse?

My 2nd question is the pitch on a prop....I took a 23 pitch off and put a 17 pitch on it. I know one pitch will cause the boat to have less hole shot and one will give it more speed at top end...Which does what.??..I am not too concerned about top end speed, I just want to have less hole shot.

as far as the bubble collapse, the filter screen at the end of the pickup tube may have some "crap" on/in it. May have to pull the tube to check.

More pitch equals better top end speed, but reduced hole shot and reduced rpm's. Less pitch gives you better hole shot and increased rpm's...less top end speed. Have the other guys back this up. This is assuming both props are the same diameter.

I should have added this in my original post. I just put a new line and bulb on it last week and checked the pick up line. I also replaced all the fuel lines under the cowling. The tank is an on board 21 gallon tank with a new vent hose and vent that mounts on the side of the boat.

did you clean the tank out, get all of the "old scale" out? How long had the boat been sitting before you started the restoration?
Other sites that I have been looking at say that the ethanol will loosen the old scale from the interior of a tank and it will become a floating debris in the tank subject to pickup and clog the strainer on the end of the pickup tube.

Many tanks have a check valve coming straight off the tank. Just looks like a pipe thread to hose barb fitting.Check it to make sure it isn't gummed up/partially plugged up. This just happened to us ,on my friends boat down in the keys. Also ,are you running a fuel filter/water separator, before or after primer bulb?

The boat had been sitting for for about 5 years. I thoroughly cleaned out the tank when I stripped the boat down so I feel comfortable with that. Last week, I couldn't get gas to pump from the tank and I checked the pick up line. It appeared to be sitting flat on the bottom of the tank and when I squeezed the bulb, it must have been forming a suction directly to the bottom of the tank. So I didn't cut any of the length off, rather I cut and angle on the end so it would still touch bottom and still have an opening for gas to flow thru. I didn't look any further for anything gummed up or partially blocked, so I'll start there this afternoon.

Double check your vent port and make sure there ain't a mudd dobber nest pluggin it up. Some reason them lil bassturds loved pluggin the hole on my dads Aquasport.

23 pitch to 17 pitch is a huge jump. Make sure ya watch yer tach and don't over rev and pop a cylinder.
