Thread: Steinhatchee info

Hi,
I'm a Georgia boy who wants to try this area to fish.

I'm planning a trip in mid January with father in law.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to lodging and/or fishing tips?

I've done some research and it looks like I'll need a temporary permit which is about $17.00.

Would it be best to try the flats for some trout, or have they moved into the river this time of year?
I have a 18ft Carolina Skiff, how far out would be safe to go? Admittedly, I'm a little nervous about being to far from land... but I trust my boat.
Since I've only fished fresh water in Georgia, I've never had a need for a radio and don't know if I should get one or not.

What's the best idea's and suggestions for a first time fisher of the area?

Your best shot is in the river ... a little late for the best .. depends on river conditions as well ... Been a long time since I was down that way .. there were several Fish Camps back then .. an 18' Skiff should be just fine if you have to go on the flats (try mouth of creeks and all of the holes) ..... WATCH the weather and plan accordingly.

Got over there for the first time last April to Horseshoe, just below Stienhatchee. We fished the area known as Pepperfish which is between the two of them. Alot of people were using the Gulp baits. They would fish them underneath Cajun Thunders mostly and also just put them on a jig head for the normal cast and retrieve. Most of the boats were just a couple miles off the beach at that time of year. Guess you know the month of February is closed for trout there. Good luck.

Try River Haven Marina and you can stay at the River Inn. Home Trout should be in the river this time of year and you will need to fish the channel edges.

ideal fish camp, sea hag marina both have beds. you'll have the river to yourself. Dad owned a place there for years. winter or at least january was always poor fishing.
