I didn't plan on offending any body about sturgeon fishing. What ever type of fish that swims in the water weather Carp or brim I just like to fish. I'm lucky to be able to fish year round any place in the country I want to go. Strpper fishing in Lake Mead, Lake Powell. Charter in California, Oregon, Washington Canada, Van Coover Island. I just Like to Fish Peroid.San Wan Islands. Crappie I have 26 pounds of fillets in freezer. I'm just a guy that loves to fish for any kind of fish. I also float tube and tie my own flyes. I cut up a 4 pound trout and used for sturgeon bait. Lot of people have never even caught one that big. Idaho was the host state and the fish and game asked ne to head up a sturgeon trip for them. Yes, I did, There were 15 states represented. Some had never seen a sturgeon. I cut my 4 pd trout up on that trip. One of the guests asked what the hell are you doing. I'm Cutting this trout up and using it for bait. Hell we don't even catch trout that big back home. There ended up being 10 sturgeon caught out 15 guests. Sir I just like to fish.

I think there are sturgeons in the Arkansas river. But, don't get caught cutting up no crappies or trout for bait. I know a guide (used to be) that lost his liscense and is still paying off a fine just for having trout roe in his boat.
Them sturgeons must be good eating. This thread has mentioned Crappie, trout, and shrimp being used for bait. I would just as soon eat all of that stuff myself.

That is how I feel about Trout , good for bait.:o But illegal for bait here like DP said.:rolleyes: The Sturgeon we have here are not like those ocean run giants, they are small. One species here is on the endangered species list, the other is extemely small.. All joking aside I love to catch anything that will streach my line. I have been known to fish for Grinnel, Carp, Gar,Drum ,and other rough fish when fishing is slow. I perfer Crappie , then Catfish or Bass.;)

Thanks for the reply. We are able to use any fish we catch and use it as cut up bait here in Idaho. Trout, whitefish, perch, chubs, Pike Minnows ( which is a squaw fish that had to be change because it offended the Indians.) We are having a lot of problems with the Indians here in Idaho. There wanting to put Gill nets in the Clear water River Taditionally they never had Gill nets in that part of the River. They can snag fish at the Hatcherys where the fish enter the Hatcherys to be spawned. They have been known to go into holding pens and spesr. Salmon and Steelhead that is getting ready to be spawned bye the hatchery people.. I rest my case.:mad:

I'm like you sir I love to fish period, I don't care what it is, fresh or salt water. Have a great time out fishing. Went out fishing -04-08-2008 after crappie brought home 100 fish. Going out again 04-11-2008 after crappie. I have 26 pounds of crappie fillets in my freezer, frozen in pound packages. Your write about trout they aren't fit to eat. There nothing like crappie, brim, bass, or Bluegill.:mad::)

In NY, sturgeon are illegal to possess in either of the two species of sturgeion found in NY (roundnose and lake sturgeon).

As for those that you may have offended... I think that any time you tell a fisherman that they don't know how to catch fish, you run a very high risk of offending them. Not a great way to make friends and influence people.

I guarantee that every fisherman, no matter how experienced, can always learn something new. "Experts" may know a lot, but you'll never find an angler that knows everything. There is always an amount of challenge to a successful outing (unless you use dynamite). That's why it's called "fishing", not "catching".

When it comes to crappie fishing, if you stick around crappie.com for a while, you'll come to realize that there is more knowledge about crappie fishing right here on this website than you'll find anywhere else - in the world.

it all varies where im fishing what time of year and the conditions.... there really isnt 1 set way to catch eyes, you basically have to be familiar with the areas you fish around here and eventually you will figure out what works here is some examples..

this time of year im fishing shallow windswept flats with spoons, jerkbaits, sometimes a jig an minnow or a jig with grub tail...

summer ill troll deep ledges and humps mainly with jigs and minnows or jigs and grub tail..cept in evenings ill go to flats near deep water and troll the ledges with shad raps or cast the flats or any humps in lakes..

fall basically will do more trolling along ledges then anything and ocasionally fish a flat..if desperate ill slow troll a leech on a lindy rig but seldom do that since i hate leeches...

these are just a few examples but there is times that they dont work for me and il just throw a kastmaster spoon on and catch the heck out of em on sandy bottoms with no structure..go figure?


ohh and no worries everyone is a smart-azz around here from time to time but most are great guys noone holds a grudge and as you see we all get along just peachy now
