Launched my crappie boat for the first time in a real reservoir last Sunday morning in Wedowee Alabama. I had never been to this lake, and had no idea where to start. I fired up the little Johnson 25 and went downstream to a steep rock bank and felt that was a good place to start. I anchored, dropped in a minnow about 5 feet, and another a little deeper. Trying to get settled, the first bobber disappeared within minutes. Too violent for a crappie, I thought, as the bobber was easily snatched under. Was a very colorful spotted bass, but very small. The other bobber was violated a few minutes later, but turned out to be a little channel cat. Two guys in one of those million dollar bass boat kept getting closer, so I asked them, “ Where’s all the crappie?”. “Oh you gotta go upstream a couple of miles, they’re tearin’ em up!”....Upstream I go, vacating a really good spot. Ended up in 3-4 feet of chocolate colored swirling river where I spent more time fighting winds and currents instead of fishing. Fish finder shows nothing but a barren bottom riverbed. Got suckered this time, but will know better next time!
