    Default Better lucky than good

About 15 years ago I was spring walleye fishing the Maumee River in Ohio with my buddy Lee (who you will hear more about in future stories). We were anchored up casting 1/2 oz jigs and bouncing them back with the current. He was having a pretty good day with a couple of fish in the box but I couldn't buy a bite. I did manage to lose several jigs to the gods of the depths and as I was tying on yet another new piece of lead Lee announced quite loudly and with much glee that he had another fish on. As he brought his nice female 5 pounder up to the boat I picked up the landing net, dipped into the murky river and scooped up his third fish of the day. When I dumped the fish onto the bottom of the boat, I'll be danged if there weren't two fish, his 5 pounder and a 3 pound male. Score now him 3 me 1. About an hour later I still wasn't having any luck, losing more jigs and catching nothing but sticks. As I was reeling in what i assumed was the last piece needed for a face cord I told Lee that this stick was fighting harder than the others. As I pulled my jig out of the water I saw that I hadn't caught a stick, it was a piece of rope. When I got to the other end of the rope, there was my 2nd and final fish of the day. So there you have it, proof that luck is sometimes better than skill.
