My grandpa lives in Arkansas and has a bauxite pit I fish. It's overgrown and I am about the only person to ever fish it now. It is crawling with snakes, big ones small ones and all sizes in between. I always carry a 357 mag loaded with snake shot. Two weeks ago I shot the fattest cottonmouth I have ever seen and a small copperhead. The cottonmouth took 3 shots to kill and he was spittin mad. He was minding his own business on top of a dead fallen tree when I popped him. The copperhead was semi covered in pine needles and I almost stepped on him.

Here's a couple of snake pics for you posted on another website I'm a member of.I'd hate to come across this out farmin' or fishin' anywhere's.
The snake had eaten an impala ewe and was trying to go through the electric fence when it was killed by the electric fence. The pictures were taken on Silent Valley Ranch in the Waterberg mountains of South Africa. There was an impala that was removed from the pythons stomach.
Here's the facts about this snake.
The Rock python is Africa's largest snake. The rock python eats mammals and birds.
Lays up to 100 eggs about the size of a tennis ball in antbear (Aardvark) holes, hollow tree or similar suitable place. The female coils herself around the eggs to protect them.
The snake in this picture had eaten a full grown Impala ewe and, sadly, caught itself in an electric fence.
Over four metres in length, this was a large specimen.
When the python was skinned we found a full grown Impala ewe had just been swallowed.
The python kills its prey by coiling itself around the animal and constricting it. When the animal is dead the python swallows it normally head first.Having swallowed its prey, the snake will find an abandoned burrow or hollow tree in which to hide and digest its meal.
A python's bite is not poisonous but would be very painful.

I don't think I would waste my snake shot on that one. I'm not sure it would do any good. That looks like a job for a 12 gauge.
10 ga 3 1/2" magnum........... and pulling the trigger a bunch of times!
Man I'm glad we ain't got snakes that big here! Dang little o'bitty one will make me dance a jig and I ain't even irish! Long as I can see em first I'm fine, but when I look down and that sucker is under my feet, this 250 pounds is moving! At Mach speed!:D

Chuck the aggrivating stuff.......... Just go Fishing!
I think I have seen more snakes this year even with the cool weather we have been having than I have seen in the last 2 years. We camped at Patoka lake Easter weekend and saw a bunch. These were black and yellow. Never seen these before. Anyone have any idea what kind they were?

I happened to look down while my boyfriend was sliding the boat into the water, just in time to see a snake slither about five inches away from my foot. I am terrified of snakes. they are all rattle headed copper moccasins to me! I wait until the boat has been moved before I get near it now!

Mperry, sounds like they are just a banded water snake. There are different kinds of non venomous water snakes. They won't hurt you and are harmless.
I have never understood why anyone wants to kill a snake for fun. The thing to remember is leave it alone and it won't bother you.
A lot of people think my kids and I are crazy because we catch snakes all the time.
I caught a cotton mouth in Reel Foot last year in a boat lane. Kept it in a bucket and gave it to the viewing center across from Boyettes. They could not believe it. They said that most people just kill them.
here is a link to kind of give you an idea of the venomous and non venomous snakes of North America.

I only killed a snake one time and that was because it struck at me. Not sure if it was poisonous but it had a pretty bad attitude. It was on a riverbank and he and I both wanted the same spot. He lost.
