"For extra precision, it offers 5 Hz Measurement Pulse Output with rising edges that align to precise 0.2 second increments of UTC time, as long as the receiver has reported a valid and accurate position during the past 4 seconds".
This information is from a GPS chip set that has the 5 HZ refresh capability.
What this is basically saying is that the 5 hz refresh is a calculated guess based on received position from the GPS satellites and a digital clock internal to the gps receiver, not the satellite signal coming 5 times a second.. I believe this technique is used in agriculture and surveying.
I do not know much about this as there is not much info on the net yet.
Everyone is tight lipped about this stuff.

HB GPS system updates once per second at its fastest set up, The New Lowrance 16 channel GPS puck updates its system 5x's per second. I bet U will not find a lag in their system, period.02-19-2009, 09:53 PM

Lowrance provides a better solution for 2d
Lowrance broad sounder software takes that to a new level
Lowrance GPS has yet to show users the "lag time" in the gps system, HB has

In defense of HB, the gps sattelites only update every second. Pings from heaven are 1 second apart. I don't have a clue what Lowrances is doing with their refresh. It ain't from the sattelite Gods.
They all have one thing in common. Get your money...
It is hard to compare the units using the manufs published specifications. All of them (manufs) have their own method of stating their units specifications. There are no common rules/guidelines for the specifications. They tell us anything they want. I gurantee these facts.
Power ratings are a farce. It is not audio power as we know it in stereos.
These are the things they really dont want us to know. I have had this conversation before with HB. I believe HB should be clear about their published power ratings and so should the rest of the manufs. And, by the way HB, I do understand DBm. HB, you just fail to mention this on your web page and your manuals (just as how power is measured and with respect to what). All are guilty of misleading facts.
I will gurantee I will be reading and checking out all of you manufs. Shame on you for the misleading information.

This is what I got when I recently emailed Lowrance about the SI:
Thank you for your inquiry.
We are currently working on a side scan unit. At this time, everything is still in product development and any information we can provide at this time would be premature. We are expecting the release sometime this year, but have no date at this time. As soon as this does become available, it will be posted on our website.
We do apologize that we can not provide more detail at this time.
If we can be of further assistance, feel free to contact us.
Thank you for choosing Lowrance Electronics.

Seems like they keep going back and forth. I read that the prices will be available in July, which makes it tough to get the units ready by March as some have said. And now they will be only for HDS 8 and 10. What about those not wanting to drop the ridiculous money on those who would rather get the smaller HDS? I personally will be going with the HB. They have been working to fix all the problems so far, and since the units are updatable, at least we won't have to buy a new unit to get the latest software. HB has a good head start on the problems. While Lowrance is fixing their issues once it arrives, those of us with HB will be fishing. Not to say that the Lowarnce won't be awesome, but I for one don't have the extra $$$ to keep buying new transducers and the like after spending $1000-$3000 to begin with.

I think i'll just wait a while before i get my SI. I dont want to buy a unit with a known problem that the company wont fix at all. At least they are admitting the problem now tho. The newer SI that will be released later this year may not be as good as the older model in some ways, but at least they've had a chance to take a look at what the other model wont do. Maybe they will correct that problem and be competative in prices. Before i throw down $2K to $3K, i'll do my homework on the latest releases first. Guys that already have them, just keep enjoying yours to the fullest extent of what it will do for you. Thats why i'm buying mine.
When you really think about it, no matter what we buy, there will always be something better right around the corner. The way I see it, if I keep waiting for something better, I'll never buy anything. Lowrance will release theirs, then HB will work to top it, then Lowrance to top HB, and so on and so on. I know guys who have the HB SI and are very happy with it and use them to catch a lot of fish. Just gonna buy mine and, like Chaunc said, enjoy it to the fullest extent of what it will do for me. Not to mention with the $$$ I might save with the HB, I can afford the upgraded GPS puck if need be. I'm sure those who buy the Lowrance when it does come out will love it. They always put out a great product. I just can't wait any longer. The Joneses are pulling away and I gotta try to keep up:D.
