    Default ground question

I am finally getting around to an old problem I have just been living with -
interference on depthfinder from trolling motor...

H'bird 787, MinnKota universal sonar II, seperate batteries

fine at speed 1 or wide open, but at 2-3 or so, get blue "grass" coming
up off the bottom that no amount of filter or lack of sens. will get rid of.

I remember something about connecting the ground on my starting battery
(that the df is hooked to) with the trolling batteries??? This ring a bell
with anyone? Anyhow, I'm a little confused on the tm battery end of it
as to where to hook it. I'm running 24V tm, and the boat is wired with
each batt. hooked 12V, then it is jumpered in the panel up in the bow...
    Clear as mud?

I think what you're talking about is a discussion a while back about running a ground wire from the foot of the TM back to the ground on the battery. Discussions and examples I've followed were a dedicated wire all the way back to the physical battery itself. Don't know why it shouldn't also work running it to your TM panel and tying into the ground there though.

    J White,

You can contact the girls in our customer service department and let them know what setup you have on your boat. They will send out the correct kit for you. Everyone that I have installed have usally cleaned the problem up. Customer Service number is 800-633-1468.

Joby - I called while ago (before I read this) and the gal told me I just
needed to run a wire from the neg on my start battery to the hull of the
boat??? I thought it was kinda funny she didn't even ask me if it was
    aluminum or fiberglass.

I wondered what this would do, since it's already got continuity through the
motor... I checked with ohm meter.

Anyway, I'll call back and ask about this kit. Thank you, Jeff

Ok, just got off the phone with c.s. Dropped your name and asked
    point blank about the kit.

They said they'd send me a kit with the ferrites and some other stuff -
then they asked if I had any accesories with it, told them I'm gonna be
installing an interlink in a few days, hooking it in with my 797...

then they said they were gonna send me a new transducer for the 797 also.
Wow, big bucks here. I'm impressed if, a little bit confused.
Anyway, thank you Joby. When it all gets here I'll try it out and let you know.

You get all this schitz working right, let me know. I 'll come down with my camera and look at yo rug...

I guess I need one of them noise kits too, but I ain't buying one....

Grounding a TM case as such violates grounding principles I lernt in engineering 101.

    So much for that class.:o

Ok folks, got a call from a gal at c.s. later, she told me I was missing
one part of the kit, the "trolling motor choke" said they were on backorder
and it would be along when they got one.

They did however, send an extra one of the big ferrite rings (sent 3)
one on each interlink cable, the extra one is for???

So I took my t.m. power leads and looped them through the extra,
figured it couldn't hurt. Could only get four turns through it, the wire is
too big for more. Anyway, tried stuff out, and it is an improvement.
Didn't completely do away with the grass at my usual settings, but I
was able to back off my sens. a little and clean it up acceptable,
which I couldn't before. Thanks Joby

p.s. Canepole, this was a freebie - call and ask 'em about it.
