You are going to get all kinds of recommendations and all of them will be good. Around here the Lowrance H2O is very popular. Most say the B/W units will track at lower speeds. The Garmin heck most all of them are good units. You really don't need a super high priced unit to do what you want. Just learn to use what you get it and it will do it's part. Good luck with which ever unit you buy.
I use bouys markers to mark the spots once I find them. It is easier to stay on your spot with the bouys.

I personally like the Garmin units. The cheapest one you can buy will suffice as long as it has a 16 channel receiver and is WAAS enabled. The price goes up for features that are nice - screen resolution, mapping capabilities, electronic compass and color. Take a look at the Garmin GPS Map 76 series. Some have been disontinued now I think, but they are all creat units. Compare the 76 all the way through the 76CSX for the difference in price and feature.

I'd expect to get anywhere from 10 foot to 20 foot of accuracy depending. Keep in mind that's a 10ft or 20 foot circle around the receiver and the actual location of the pile could be anywhere in that circle. Some get better than others and some are just better than others at using and interpreting them.

You will note they all seem to be exactly the same except for the items I mentioned above. Also whether or not they accept a data card (maps) and the interface type. Good bit of price difference between them for just those little options.

I've heard a lot of folks talk about the Etrex series as well, but I don't know much about them.

I,ve got a garmin map76 that day in and day out gets me as close as my lowrance 5300c chart plotter

I recently purchased a Garmin GPSMAP60CSX and it is working well for my needs. It does a good job fishing, driving,and hiking.It has a color display,electronic compass and uses a microSD memory card.You can plan on buying some mapping software because the basic maps are not vevy detailed.Do your research and read the reviews before you buy.Good luck.

I have had a GarminMAP76Csx gps for about four months now and it is just great. I got it on a BIG sale at PCNation for about $240.00. It comes with all you need to fish with. Even the map is all you really need to spot your fishing stuff. I went ahead and ordered the topo maps from mapsource so I could use it for hunting.

It's waterproof and it even floats. They average about $400.00 + but you can find it MUCH cheaper. With a hand-held, you can take all your secret waypoints WITH you when you're fishing from another boat.

Finally, it is very user-friendly. I don't think a fisherman can buy a better unit.

My brother has an Etrex and I have transferred all my waypoints to him and his will do the trick, as well. It's just smaller and b/w but just as good of a brush pile finder (about a hundred bucks at Wal-Mart. So there you go.

This gps stuff will open up a whole new realm for your fishin' I gar-ron-tee.
