Question Another question about Humminbird GPS......

For many years, I never used Fish Finders or GPS to fish for Crappie. I just grabbed some minnows and went fishing. In the late 80's I was introduced to jigs and I only used them to shoot docks at nights. I caught fish both ways. Then "Life" got in the way and I quit fishing for several years. I started back Crappie fishing 2 years ago and was more financially able to get the toys that everyone else was using, but on the "low end" of the scale. This is when I was introduced to Trolling. I bought a couple of Eagle fish finders mainly to know the depth of water I was in. My fishing partner bought a Garmin handheld to mark the channels. Long story short, Eagle did not want to do right on their warranty on a 2 month old unit and i dropped them and went to all Humminbird. I now have a 717 Fish finder, a 383c Combo, and a 755c GPS unit. I have only been on the water once with my 383c and I was only marking a channel with it then. I have not used my 755c yet, it is still in the box. I know these unit are still on the "low end" of the Humminbird scale compared to the 997,787,etc...but with all the talk about Humminbirds "Piss Poor" GPS system, does this also apply to these less expensive units also???...Maybe I should not have been so hasty with Eagle

I read a lot of the bad press on HUMMINDIRD gps and just dont get it. I have a garmin etrex and HUMMINBIRD 797 and If either one get me within 50ft of where I want to be thats great. I always slow down and slip up to the brush or stake bed anyway. I figure I aint droppin bonbs so why do I need to be accurate to 6in. I like my stuff. now to be honest I was a little confused at first. but now I know it was operator error and not equipment failure... good luck and hope you give them a chance. just my opinion....

50 foot? Lets see ...pie r square. 3.14 times 50 times 50 = 7850 square feet of water to look for a pile of brush, etc.

I don't think so. I wanna fish, not look for hidden treasures.

You guys are just way better than I with these electronic devices. That is all i can say.

Can any of you follow a plotted track with any degree of accuracy? I think not. I could be wrong. My name is Thomas. I doubt things.

I here where you coming from. It is hard to troll using the 997. I just turn it off.

Sooner or later HB will fix the problem. You gonna spend the $200 to get closer than 5o feet by buying that new antenna?

I have been reading about these units for quite a while, and I have just now saved up enough money for a 1197. I was just about to drop the hammer on a new unit, and then all these complaints about the GPS started. I am mainly wanting the unit for the side imaging, but I can see where the GPS would be vital for finding the brushpiles that you see on the SI. My question is, is the SI worth the $2500 that a 1197 costs, or do you folks that own a SI regret your purchases. I do plan on waiting for the updates to occur before I spend that much $$$, I am just wanting people's honest opinion on these products. And one more question I have is where is Joby. When everyone was jumping on the HB bandwagon he was here all the time, now I have not hardly heard from him or anyone else from HB. I just think that HB would have a couple people that check in from time to time to offer answers to the many questions that are always being posted.

im with thomas...i wanna drive over the little dot...drop a marker and fish. I cant do that real well with my 997. Lag time of the cursor is a big issue right now with me. Major headache everytime I go fishing but i love the sideimaging. If only I didnt have to spend 10 minutes trying to find what I see with it I would be a happy camper.

I wanna use the trolling grid and do some mapping. I can't because of the delay and the inaccuracy of the gps.

Yep. Mapping, treasure hunting for Civil war relics, lost engines, bodies, etc.

I can only catch/eat so many fish.

So, Cane Pole, your answer to my question is all Humminbirds with GPS is they are all way off?...I value your opinion and experience with these products. I am probably not looking for or expecting to be as close as what you expect, but I think everyone wants the best for their money, especially when you have 1000's invested
