The unit will save the images to a SD Card. Then you can download the images to your computer. You can do this by buying a card reader from your local retailer.

Follow along on my epic journey.
OK, I bought a used 797. Came with a Navionics Gold Chip. Haven't installed yet, but it's on my list.
Chip/image question - There's only one chip slot. I assume the unit has some internal memory as well as some memory space left on the chip. So, let's say I go out and take several snap shots (so I can bring them back here and ask what they mean). Does the unit save it to the card or to the internal memory? I guess if it's to the internal memory and I'm wrong about the space on the card, I'd have to insert a blank card, download to the blank chip, then upload to a PC from that chip.
Am I off base already?

At walmart I purchased my 4 gig SD card and it came with a reader. Most of the cards did not. Good luck.

So, what about the Navionics card then? Do you upload the charts to the unit, then insert the blank card to operate on? Kind of different way of going about it than I'm used to.

Nope, on the 797, you have to choose between the Nav card or a blank card to save images. Or switch back and forth.

It's the same with the 787C2.
Either you have the Navionics card installed and are unable to take pictures, or you install a blank card and fly with the built in unimap.

There are performance issues with cheaper cards. I bought a normal crucial 2GB sd card and the pictures took about 5 seconds or more to save.
Got tired of that, and then bought a san disk extreme III card and it takes a second to save the image. The high speed card is well worth the extra 10-15 bucks IMO.
Yes Mduncan is right go with the Extreme III, look on line many of major stores will have them on sale on net & you just orfer & pick up in store. Was several reports of cheap cards not working after several trips

Well now wait a minute. Where are the waypoints and tracks saved then?
I think I better go ahead and order a cigarette adapter for that 76CSx. Batteries are gonna get expensive.
