What you do is run the map card in the unit till you are ready to do a recording or snapshot. Then you swap cards(mapping with a blank) Do the recording and when done swap back! Make sure you push the lock tab too lock on the map card so you don't accidentally record or write anything too it and screw it up!
Way points and tracks will stay in the unit till you do a " export all Nav data" or a "Save track"
If you are just marking waypoints and not takeing snapshots turn off the record feature so it wont write or try to write to you map card!
This is where the 900 series has an advantage! 2 card slots!!
Good luck You will Like it!

I'll just have to work around it, or carry two cards I guess.

No you can still save your waypoints and do your scans and look at the maps. The only thing that you wont be able to do it take snap shots (pictures). The way points are save on the unit, not to the card. Depending on what maps you have, you will soon find out they are worthless on Truman anyway. I have the 2007 premium maps, the map contours stop at the highway C bridge on the osage arm, nothing above that.

Thanks for the info Tae. Right now I'm just running mapcreate maps on my lowrance. I was going to order the Navionics SD card from Cabela's. Sounds like I can just wait though. What is the size of a normal snapshot from a 797?

I'm planning on trying to save now, and maybe just upgrade to a 900 series cho in 2009.

I'm hoping the 797 works well for me and gives me a good picture of what's below the surface.

Your 797 will show you every thing a 997 will, It just will be on a smaller scale. You will like it. If you have problems check out the sideimageing group at yahoo. There are tons of helpers there!

I joined that group a week or so ago. Very informative, and I've enjoyed looking at all the pictures. Can't wait till the unit is delivered.

Lowrance and hummingbird use different file formats. So at a minimum you would have to convert the mapcreate waypoints and tracks to Hummingbird format! Hummingbird has a software called "Hummingbird pc" that can do that!

that is correct Humminbird pc will convert Lowrance gps files to Hummingbird files. Just remember to back up your data before you convert in case something goes wrong! It works great. But you know Murphy's law!
