I just purchased and installed the 997 SI. I'm looking forward to going to the lake and "practicing". I would appreciate any hints you guys have about getting started or where to begin. Thanks in advance for any tips.

My suggestion is to set the view to show full screen side scan. Setup to show your GPS speed. Hit menu once and set your screen scroll speed to 3, 4 or 5, and troll either 3, 4 or 5 mph. Keep your scroll speed matching your GPS speed. Set your scan distance to 100 or less, and drive around and look.
Anything you can keep in manual, leave it.
Enjoy the view. You will be amazed.

Read the manual then read it again. Then keep on reading it again. Then take it with you.
The more you use the unit and read up on it the better it gets/

2) Remember to "Look Up" every now and then,, You'll see what I mean
3) Look at structure that you are familiar with first
All very good advice esp. look at known structure first & don,t use it in a crowd cause you are going to forget to look where you are going! Also what I did was write a cheat sheet, to keep from fumbling in manual. Just how to set chart speed, how to adjust side finder distance, take pict, get back to side view if/my thumb gets in way, that kept frustration down cause I didn't have to search book. I had a ball, laughing & talking to picts like somekinda nut(well maybe so) People say me nuts to spend the $ on 997, but I get the last laugh when I go pass their fishin boat say 70- 80 feet away & not only can I see/take pict of what they are crappie fishin, I also have gotten pretty good at tellin if there's fish on that structure also, if so I mark the waypts of their structure all from 80 feet away--now who has the LAST laugh:D :D :D And them crazy folks wave back to me after I wave-thanking them for giving me another new spot Ha Ha
Also what helped me was hookin up a 12v power source and playing
with it in house til I doing it in sleep. Sir-- Have FUN:p :p
I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.....

Go to Ebay and enter "humminbird power supply" into the search box. I got the AC converter so I can set in my easy chair and play with it.
