    Default Redneck sidescan.

    Yep.

I am making one for my Jon boat. I can vary the xducer either side of center by 45 degrees. A little trig tangent function says I can look up into the air with the 45 degree pitch and a 20 degree cone angle. This ain't guess work, it is just simple trigonometry. I will be using this rig in the buck brush this spring. This whole rig costs less than the Humminbird 797 si xducer. It will work. I know my stuff.:D

This oughta work good in narrow creeks looking at banks, etc. Prob work good at Reelfoot too.

What I could really use is some thing similar to a TV rotor that runs on 12v, like your stepper motor, that could be set to rotate the side scan 360° for a screen capture. With the right graphics program you could then turn it from a square image into a circular one that would show stuff as it is.
Should work good up front on your boat.
