Thread: 997 recording

Recordings can only be replayed on the unit and you can't do or change any thing from them. You can't make waypoints or do screen captures. There is a group trying to create a program to view the files from the computer but I haven't checked in on the site in a while.

WarrenMn- Could you recommend any mapping program to use with my 997S. I would like to be able to move points to a map and make changes. Couple lakes I am fishing & taking pict are not really in navatronis hotmaps but maybe I could use 997 to take a pict of the blank map showing on screen. Was going to post on side finder site but seeing your post thought I should ask a expert. Thanks. Was told that the Humminbird computer program is of little/no help what do U think thanks again.

I got to rearrange my web site to better cover this stuff. Expert? Casual user is better term. Right now I use three main programs, DrDepth, Fugawi and Global mapper and I shouldn't forget to mention the Humminbird 997 with the way it helps collect the data.

Fugawi is an excellent moving map software, I hear Ozimapper is too but I've only used Fugawi. It'll take in the Humminbird waypoints, track and trails export and is extremely handy for working with them. You can change names easily, sort them out and save and even share with other types of units like Lowrance then reload them on a chip and back into the unit.

Now if your talking about mapping a lake, DrDepth running on a laptop is the only way to go. It'll even let you create 3D maps for you to watch as you troll if your laptop is some what fast. http://www.accuemap.com/files/3d.gif I'm using the Humminbird 997 hooked to the laptop and its been great.

Really getting into mapping? Global Mapper is what I use to put together imagery and contours and stuff for the maps I sell to run in Fugawi. Just about all the map imagery on my web site was done with Global Mapper. It'll even let me process imagery like what you see for the Clearwater lake stuff with special functions to enhance. That image is actually two that when put together just right really showed up the shallows.

Thanks for reply , that USA article is really a great article especially the part about You. Sounds like Fugawi will do everything & more for my needs. My old brain can only absorb so much. Will leave the real stuff to you guys. :rolleyes:

It was my understanding that all you could get out of the 997 was Nema 0183.

I get this (nema 0183) from my Garmin GPS 10. Wireless, no umbilical cords.

Something new coming from the 997 that I am not aware of or have overlooked or might have to get a 997 to find out?

Why doesn`t Warren and Canepole get a class together and teach this stuff! The money profited would buy you alot of toys!

Garmin might have a problem that I've found in a lot of different sonars, where they give you a depth might be delayed from where the coordinate was taken, or vise versa. What then happens is the faster you go the more distance between the two. When going back and forth mapping the end product ends up with surpentine contour lines. Early on the Lowrances had it to such a degree I warned people not to collect data over the speed of a troll. The last time I up dated my Simrad one of the big boys sonars actually had almost six seconds between when the unit took the coordinate and put it on the NMEA line and when it took the depth. So when I got the Humminbird the plan was it was for just its side scan. I was really happy when it worked perfect for the mapping. But now I have a Simrad sonar and Airmare B256 transducer that I don't use. Back up I guess.
Per, owner of DrDepth, is working on ways to eliminate this with his software. I've lost track as to how its coming along seeing I don't have to worry about it. And talking to Doc, he thinks most of it in the Lowrance hard drive units is gone, not sure about the others.

I was not aware of this propagation. I am going to get Dr. Depth and do a little mapping this coming spring. I am using Oziexplorer. Not much difference between it and Fugawi that I can tell. I haven't done any mapping myself. I just import maps and calibrate them with Oziexplorer. Takes time as you know. I have no mosaic program either.
