    Other switcher puts out 5v.
The little ones won't work with that kind of draw. I was drawing about .5a when I used them. The Everstart Maxx is a good battery for the price and should work well for the current you need.

Laptops are pretty power hungry. It might be cheaper to consider multiple laptop batteries to avoid the 15% loss from the conversion, and the power to weight ration for the Nimh batteries is better than the lead-acid.

With your switching converter on the laptop, you might see some issues if you choose a spiral cell battery. Their physical construction makes them behave somewhat oddly and unpredictably at current pulse frequencies above 1KHz due to the inductance added by the physical layout of the plates.

Another option would be to put in a big dual-purpose battery or deep-cycle as your cranking battery, then add a 12V-12V DC-DC converter to get a clean 12V for your graphs etc., and rely on the laptop adapter to clean up that power. Powerstream sells a converter for a little over $100 that I've used in some electrically noisy (Try an 800A one second pulse out of an 8D battery for noise) systems to operate portable computers and video cameras with good success. Probably close to a wash on the converter vs. the charger for an extra battery cost issue, but it probably is simpler.

Try a solar charger they should help some. In your case canepole you may need one half the size of Paris.

What does the laptop do? Does it have a rechagreable battery? I just don`t see a reason (that improves catch rate) to have a laptop going at all times while fishing. Do you have some programs we do not know about?

Cat fan, you got me to looking and a searching with your input. Went to Johnson Controls and see where they make Optima and Varta. Couldn't verify Everstart, but, that done mean nothing. ha

Ran across this info in consumers reports. I am sure it also applies to marine batteries. The link below is a good read.

Most auto batteries are made by just three manufacturers, Delphi, Exide, and Johnson Controls Industries. Each makes batteries sold under several different brand names. Delphi makes ACDelco and some EverStart (Wal-Mart) models. Exide makes Champion, Exide, Napa, and some EverStart batteries. Johnson Controls makes Diehard (Sears), Duralast (AutoZone), Interstate, Kirkland (Costco), Motorcraft (Ford), and some EverStarts

It is a tablet. It has sonar, gps, and viewable sidescan maps. Yep. I am looking at the bottom of the lake maps. Thanks to Kentucky Hydrographics sidescan maps and Oziexplorer. It is pretty neat and it is dead on.
I got all the bugs worked out and it don't take up all that much space. I run bluetooth between my pda , gps, and tablet (bluetooth enable devices). I like it. I aint gonna get lost. I am my wives fishfinder.

Now, if Humminbird would just get on board. haha This is why I hassle Humminbird Greg. I think he understands what I am doing or what I want.

Sounds like alot to keep up with! I would be stepped on something or got caught in the rain and ruint the laptop. By the way what do you do in the rain? I bet you can pull up some good radar maps with a wireless connection. Do you make fishing logs?

Electronics is just my hobby. That is why I got all this stuff.

I sure am getting a lot of dropped connections here...........Charter I guess. I don't use the hide me mode here.
