We use GSAK. (geocaching swiss army knife) Not sure how it is used for things other than geocaching, but it is a great program with lots of options and features we never use. Check it out!

If you really want some good info on GPS, I think the geocachers out there are probably the most knowledgeable nerds there are. www.geocaching.com has all kinds of info about GPS units and their uses, without them our hobby wouldn't exist. Best of luck to you.
