In other words, go from shallow water right straight over the contour in to deep water, turn around, move over a bit and go from the deep water back up in to the shallow water.
I seem to get a better representation of the actual drop and shape this way.
My limited experience with it gives me the same impression as you described. I’ve been fishing narrower bodies of water which makes for frequent turning around and made me think about how it’s actually looking at depth.
