I did something very similar to Cray's recommendation back in the early '70's to my Lowrance Little Green Box. Cut the cable in two with the exception that the foil shield was still holding on one side. I thought I was toast but there was a Ray Jeff guy on the dock (Toledo Bend) and he told me what to do. I used electrical tape only as that is what I had. Used that unit for several more years, gave it to a friend when I got a Super Sixty. I would say it operated for another 8-10 years w/o a problem. Good luck. What he shared WILL work. That old man emphasized to me about the shield, I remember that.
