This is probably a dumb question but: Could you turn a down view transducer sideways and have side view, to one side?

    Yes and no ...

Yes - you can aim any xducer in any direction and it will collect echo data encompassed within the beam shape being emitted from the xducer (just like a flashlight will illuminate whatever you "aim" it at) ...

The caveat is that the screen view will still be the same format and one will have to "interpret" where the echoes (being displayed) actually are within that beam shape aimed in a "different direction" than normal ...

In other words you can aim a DI xducer sideways to get echo data from the side - but what's being displayed is still going to look like a DI image ...
    -----

And another issue (with HB units anyway) is that the unit needs "correct" 2d data (digital depth) to help with the DI (and SI) algorithms in correctly displaying the data ...

2d data from an xducer "aimed" sideways will not be collecting correct 2d data for digital depth ...

Below you can see where I adjusted a SI xducer to "aim" 1 of the SI piezoes straight down to get echo data from under the boat (instead of out to the side like in Normal SI orientation) ...

But I had to also use a separate 2d xducer on the HB AS SIDBY Cable to get correct 2d data because the 2d data in the tilted SI xducer was "aimed" 60° to the side ...Name: IMG_0293.jpg

So sure your idea can be done ... It will function better if you can get correct 2d data from a separate 2d xducer ...

Then it's just a matter of interpreting what you are seeing on the DI image that is collecting data from the side ...

ive tried it with every brand of DI ive owned and some works better than others.

someone on a different forum once said he used a Lowrance to shoot sideways to look under docks. I think it was an LSS-1, which doesnt need feedback from a 2d transducer

I use a cheap HB DI unit just as you describe. It works fine for "seeing" if something is there or not. Just as Ricky said, it's not accurate as far as depth readings. It's kinda like a go or no-go guage.
