Was wondering how safe it is to hook up any depth finder to a inverter in the house to play and learn unit?

There are a number of safe way's to do it probably the easiest way is to pick up a small 12volt sealed battery at walmart, they have them in hunting area, these small batteries are used for feeders and have male spade terminals.
Just make sure and not mix up positive and negative wires to FF

I do it all the time ..... the battery will work, but you have to mess with charging it......I use one of these and bought an extra power cord for the unit.
Amazon.com: Schumacher PC-6 120AC to 6A 12V DC Power Converter: Automotive
I don't know any units that need that much power, but too much is better than too little........I do always have the unit connected to a battery when I do software updates, and make sure it is fully charged ..... If you loose power in the middle of the update you will probably end up with a brick.

Well you are not using your riding lawn mower now so why not just take the battery out and use it to power your sonar. That way you're not out of any money so you can buy more fishing stuff(Lures, etc). Just make sure you use a fuse and don't hook it up to the wrong poles.![]()
Be safe and good luck fishing![]()

Why wouldn't a computer power supply work, they put out 12v DC. I doubt any of the depth finders will draw more amps than it will produce.
HB recommends any AC to DC converter to have a minimum output of 1amp (1000ma) ...
And as mentioned ... a 3amp fuse in the positive wire (5amp for ONIX) ...
