Needs to be cellular but you can make your cell phone your personal hotspot and connect the tablet to that

Yeah they make screen covers for that. The IPad will be much more detailed than any standard unit.

Not sure about the map but the sonar returns will be. iPad has more pixels. It should be like looking at screen shots in software such as Humviewer.
