Do you think maybe it could be a bad transducer?

I recently purchased a Humminbird 959ci hd di and am having trouble getting a usable sonar signal. Neither the down imaging or the 2d imaging offer a usable view. I have a fiberglass boat and have the transducer mounted inside the bilge area. My prior unit (Lowrance) had the transducer mounted in the same area as the Humminbird transducer and it produced very good results. I would appreciate your input as to where you have your transducer mounted and what type of performance you are getting. I have spoken with the techs at both Humminbird and Ranger and both recommend placing the transducer exactly where it is now. My installer has repositioned the transducer but the performance remains poor.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Bilge mount can be difficult sometimes ...especially when it is undetermined if the hull is single layer glass or not ...
Did you test the area first by weighting the xducer down with something and adding water to the bilge ...??
Is there a reason you didn't want to mount the xducer on the transom ...??

Do you know of anyone else who is running a Humminbird DI model unit so that you could test your unit on their transducer? This would eliminate the unit as a possible cause of the problem you are seeing.
Hope they did not damage the DI transducer when they removed to reposition it… On inside-the-hull (bilge) mounted transducer you have to test them like Rickie stated (weighted down with water around them) to make sure that the location will work. Otherwise its just a guessing game.
